The period from the 16th century to the 18th century can be viewed as a high point of traditional culture in India and as the first stage of its greatest challenge. The era began with the creation of the Mughal Empire. Mughal rulers were Muslim foreigners who brought India to a peak of political power and cultural achievement and united the entire subcontinent under a single government with a a common culture. The Mughal Empire in India lasted from 1526 to 1761. Even though the Mughal Empire existed 300-500 years ago its influence still exists in India today. The social aspects of the empire relate to India today in the form of family life, religion, art, music, and literature and education. The population of the Mughal Empire is believed to have been between 110-130 million people that were spread throughout the Indian sub-continent and Persia.
